Nokia Windows Phone apps: top installs

I have had my iPhone now for 4 years, which really feels like some sort of confessional that I'm telling you this as I have just recently started using the Nokia 620 which I purchased from a fellow student as he had it lying around.

It came preinstalled with windows applications, some of which I've discovered that already have features like audio recording in OneNote, if which I really don't think I'd use for anything else.

So far I have installed the following apps.

Battery by enless soft

this app is really good, although it does have advertising when you use the main screen, it does keep track of battery life and expected day's left in charge.

eBay

I've been a moderate user of eBay on the iPhone and, it's not the same :(  the interface is different and you can't contact sellers? what's up with that.

facebook

it's easier to see things like photos, contacts, but messages are still stuck in the old design, not the bubbles.

http://www.windowsphone.com/en-au/store/app/facebook/82a23635-5bd9-df11-a844-00237de2db9e

Google Mail

I think I'm using the internal client, I just added my Gmail to my phone and it came up. Not sure how that worked :)

LinkedIN

A lot easier to use, and infact the phone sems to integrate services like this into the phone nativly.

http://www.windowsphone.com/en-au/store/app/linkedin/bdc7ae24-9051-474c-a89a-2b18f58d1317

Metrotube

I think Microsoft got the shits as I'm unable to find Youtube for Windows Phone but Metrotube does the job.

http://www.windowsphone.com/en-au/store/app/metrotube/8d93224f-2808-e011-9264-00237de2db9e

Pocket Recorder (tm)

It works, nothing much else really to say.

http://www.windowsphone.com/en-au/store/app/pocket-recorder/eda4e045-733f-e011-854c-00237de2db9e

Viber

Yes, it works on the WP, but it seems to be not as fluid as the iPhone version. It post messages but I'm let to find a way to tap to the application without going to the menu to click on the icon.

Conclusion
I'm presently surprised about the battery life, clarity of the screen, although their seems to be a few things that need to be improved. I do have to say that Nokia do have apps that they make for the phone to improve it, I guess they are yet to release such updates, I did see some beta products there.
  1. The lock screen is fiddly and really needs more than a numeric lock
    1. I like the slide down to power off
  2. The tile system needs to be improved
    1. Some tiles do give more information
  3. Apps shouldn't be so accessible, should be lockable menu
  4. Having tiles go left and right, not just up and down
  5. More notifications on the front screen, only seem to get one
  6. A built in recorder than OneNote, it seems clumsy
  7. A Youtube for WP8. Common Nokia/Microsoft!
Also, the urls for the windowsphone website are not user friendly!

Apple branded hardware & PC's

I have realized now for some time that you are able to get Apples OSX for around $20 for some time, but I was also looking at if it can be installed on a conventional computer. But not only if it can be installed, but can it be legally installed because it doesn't sound right that I could just dump a piece of art onto a supermarket.

Well, you can put it onto a PC and it's called a hackentosh. It's essentially hardware that is OSX compatible and is able to give you the joy of a real apple system, but it's not as straight forward as that.

Even though you can install it, should you? There's some debate over the EULA (End User License Agreement) to which it states that you can't install OSX onto a PC but has to be on apple branded hardware. Now, I've for some time tried to find the definition for "apple branded hardware", but i found this in clause H.

H. Other Use Restrictions. The grants set forth in this License do not permit you to, and you agree not to, install, use or run the Apple Software on any non-Apple-branded computer, or to enable others to do so.

But is this anti-competitive in Australia? To offer a product that can be purchased for the intent of using it as an operating system should it be restricted to the hardware as a condition of sale of purchase?

Possibly this is a left of field thought, but, what if you purchased apple ram, would this meet the condition of "apple branded hardware" as it is Apple product. But the arguement that Apple has taken is that of the case of that the external machine is not a apple product and that it is being sold as one, diluting the purity of Apples branding.

I wonder how IBM felt as IBM clones poped up in the 1980's. IBM did try to sue businesses that copied their OS also made IBM loose their market share.

Maybe it's time Apple jumped into the Microsoft model, would that really be a bad thing? Could offering OSX to everybody be such an impossible thing to do, I wonder how many future coders and users would benifit rather than looking at the bottom dollar figure. Since SJ is no longer around, this type of philanthropy will not be coming from Apple, I don't think there's anybody their who has the backbone to shake up the system, to question the corporate board decisions as well as to take risks.

Dr Who... hahaha! Yeah.

Ok. I have to dwell on other things, but here's my gripes. There's too much going on, with the biomechanical replicator shaped as a tree, yes, they show the pool room, the observatory, but there's still too much going on and even tho one of the salvagers took a circuit it really was unnecessary.

The "I said you where an android" crap is crap, why would he feel tired and finger nails grow and feel pain when you stub your toe, need oxygen in space or need to eat. It was rubbish. But also, how was it the time line for that incident went so back to change the history of that family so much they had a photo of their father there. I didn't like the steel rods chasing them down the corridor. It was not necessary to have these things, they confuse.

I didn't like the corridors at all. Ha, liked the library, and for those who had gripes with the war book, yes the Tardis translates languages using the translation circuit, but I had issues with the pram that still showed Gallifreyan on the side. Also, I would like to know who wrote a book on the time war, another mystery considering The Doctors feelings about the matter.

Yes, his name was there, I see that the book in itself would be more than a conventional book, as it would be not just words on a page, more like a memory in a book. Just like the vials above when she was hiding from the phantom of time.

Speaking of, I quite liked the phantoms of time (zombies) and even to the point that one mimicked Clara in the control room, that led to the broken time which lead to the idea of a fracture like in the past seasons. Also liked the time being held in the engine room and the Tardis protecting itself for several different reasons. The eye of harmony was supposed to be an artificial black hole. Even scenes from Hitch hikers Guide to the Galaxy and Charlie and the Chocolate factory where more amazing and seemed fantastic by comparison.

I didn't like the scrawling of the message in Clara's hand, that is a paradox and even tho her hand was soft and human, it was healing inverse of time of events which really only could work if the time for Clara was going backwards, but just for her hand, no, that is crap. I'd rather The Doctor think of scrawling it as a message for The Doctor to follow and not look so shocked when he saw himself and hit the button, he's a Timelord ffs.

That's my two cents.

A review of the better eps of Startrek Enterprise: Season 1.

In the short history of Startrek Enterprise, there had been a few episodes that where just watchable in first season my opinion. Below is a list of these and strike through of the sad ones.

I know we have a good knowledge of what the future holds, the issues stand when they bring in something new when it's not even known about or that the plot itself is convoluted and doesn't follow what would be normally the reaction of how Star Fleet would operate.

I would of liked to see the progression of the prime directive, first contact procedures, technology actually failing when they actually needed it, something that actaully created a bit of tension and sort of showed the inefficiencies of the UFoP.

"Broken Bow"
First contact with Klingons; the Enterprise (NX-01) is launched. Archer finds himself in the middle of a Temporal Cold War.

-This first eps is good, it shows the tension between species and also the development and formation of the crew, but the crew seem not to evolve.

"Fight or Flight"
Hoshi faces her fears on an alien ship whose crew was murdered, while Malcolm tries to upgrade the ship's defense system.

-Technology was my like in this, it showed some basic conflicts and struggles, of which seemed to dissapear later on in the season.

"Strange New World"
A storm traps an away team on an alien world, while spores cause them to experience psychosis.

"Unexpected"
Trip helps an alien crew fix their engines only to find himself pregnant.

-If I was expecting this to be bad, in someways it is, but I like the idea of something new'ish, it sort of changes the game, but we never see this race happening again or the situation.

"Terra Nova"
An early human colony on Terra Nova mysteriously disappeared 70 years ago and Enterprise is sent to find out what happened to them.

-This was enjoyable because it was something I wondered about what happened for colonies but never actually saw any of their workings, in some way it reminded me of the Voyager episode where the Borg where establishing their own community.

"The Andorian Incident"
Archer, Trip, and T'Pol are taken hostage by Andorians in the Vulcan monastery of P'Jem.

-The Andorians are an unexplored culture and it's a good feature.

"Breaking the Ice"
Malcolm and Travis seek Eisilium on a comet while T'Pol considers marriage to Koss.

"Civilization"
Archer, Trip, Hoshi, and T'Pol go undercover to observe a pre-industrial civilization to find they aren't the first observers there.

"Fortunate Son"
The cargo ship Fortunate was attacked by Nausicaans and the Enterprise lends a helping hand only to find the crew of the Fortunate has secret plans.

"Cold Front" Archer finds out a crewman on Enterprise is helping to fight the Temporal Cold War against Silik and some of the Suliban.

"Silent Enemy" Archer faces an enemy that doesn't respond to hails while Hoshi tries to find what Malcolm's favorite food is to surprise him for his birthday.

"Dear Doctor" Phlox & Archer must decide where their morals lie about letting a species live or die from a pandemic.

-This is good, I like the tension and the decisions that have to be made.

"Sleeping Dogs"
Hoshi, Malcolm and T'Pol board an unresponsive Klingon ship on decaying orbit into the crushing pressures of a gas giant.

-Again, it's an episode that is like a story of ST.

"Shadows of P'Jem"
T'Pol is recalled to Vulcan after the events of "The Andorian Incident". During her final away mission, she and Archer are kidnapped, leading to a confrontation between Vulcans and Andorians.

-This flows on from the "The Andorian Incident"eps, and should be viewed like a part two.

"Shuttlepod One"
Reed and Trip are stranded in a shuttlepod with no foreseeable help arriving before life support runs out.

"Fusion"
Enterprise encounters a crew of emotional Vulcans; T'Pol experiences her first mind meld, with unsettling results.

-This is border line. Something new and unheard of, and something interesting.

"Rogue Planet"
Enterprise finds a sunless solitary planet with a small group of Eska who are hunting wraiths, an indigenous telepathic shapeshifting species.

"Acquisition"
A group of Ferengi hijack Enterprise, but Trip, Archer and T'Pol play mind games with the pirates in order to win back their ship.

"Oasis"
Archer, T'Pol, Trip and Travis find a crew apparently alive on a ship that crash-landed years ago.

"Detained"
Archer and Travis find themselves imprisoned in a Suliban internment camp by the Tandarans.

"Vox Sola"
An unknown alien boards Enterprise and starts capturing crew members, linking them together neurologically.

"Fallen Hero"
Enterprise finds itself under attack while transporting a Vulcan ambassador.

-I like the political actions.

"Desert Crossing"
Enterprise finds itself aligned with a terrorist group when Trip and Archer are forced to cross many kilometers of desert on an alien world.

"Two Days and Two Nights"
After weeks of detours, Enterprise arrives for shore leave on Risa. While there, Archer encounters a woman who knows more about the Suliban than she's willing to admit.

"Shockwave, Part I"
The Enterprise is recalled to Earth after the crew is blamed for the accidental destruction of a colony world. En route, it is hijacked by Suliban and Archer is transported to a decimated 31st century.

 Ten episodes saved.
